Episode 2: Religious Gummy Bears

Join us for an interesting and in-depth look at the Christian privilege that resides in the recent bills attempting to determine where transgender and gender nonconforming individuals can use the restroom in various public settings.

Religious Gummy Bears and Why the Red Ones Think They're the Best.

Objective:

Define Christian privilege.

Provide detailed information outlined in the bills affecting transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.

Explain why the language used in the bills is incorrect, offensive, and speaks to Christian privilege.

Provide examples of Christian privilege in addressing individuals in public restrooms.

Explain the illogic and lack of support for the argument that transgender and gender nonconforming individuals will use the opportunity to sexually assault women.

Vocabulary:

Privilege: a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to people of a particular person or group of people.

Christian privilege: a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available to Christians.

Cisgender: a gender identity that aligns with the gender assigned at birth.

Transgender: a gender identity that does not align with the gender assigned at birth.

Gender NonConforming: refers to people who do not follow stereotypes about how they should dress or act based on the gender they were assigned at birth.

Gender assigned at birth: most people are assigned a gender at birth, often based upon their sex (genitalia). Usually, the assignments are either male or female.

Transgender vs transgendered: referring to individuals as transgendered implies that their gender is something that happened to them rather than an identity. It might help to think of how we have progressed from calling people of color “colored people”. Colored implied that their skin color was something that happened to them rather than part of their identity.
