INTERsectionality

WHAT IS INTERSECTIONALITY?

Intersectionality is the understanding that there are various facets to a person's identity such as gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. Furthermore, intersectionality is the understanding that these various facets cannot be examined individually, but rather are linked and layered and can only be examined together. For instance, a black woman cannot explore her identity as just a woman or just black because she is affected uniquely as a black woman.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Without intersectionality, the unique experiences of the individual are erased, therefore never addressed. Without addressing the pieces of our identity that make us unique, there is a lack of understanding, a lack of representation in media, and a lack of representation and protection by law.

WHAT IS WHITE FEMINISM?

To fully understand intersectional feminism and its importance, we must first understand white feminism and why it was harmful to the feminist movement and women of color.
